Introduction to Navaratri

Navaratri means “nine nights” in Sanskrit, where devotees worship Goddess Durga in her various forms. The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, and it is observed with great fervor across different parts of India. Each day is dedicated to one of Durga’s nine manifestations (Navadurga).

– The ascetic form of Durga, symbolizing devotion.

Day 3 (Tritiya):

3. Celebration Across India

Northern India: Celebrated with Ram Lila performances and fasting. The last day, Dussehra, commemorates Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana.

Western India: Known for Garba and Dandiya Raas, traditional folk dances performed in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Southern India: Devotees arrange ‘Golu’—displaying dolls representing gods, saints, and figures from daily life.

Eastern India: Durga Puja is the highlight, particularly in West Bengal, where massive idols of Durga are worshiped.

4. Fasting and Rituals

Many devotees observe fasts during Navaratri, eating only fruits, dairy, and specific fasting foods. The fasts symbolize self-purification, devotion, and mental discipline. Rituals include daily prayers, chanting mantras, and offering flowers and food to the goddess.

5. Navaratri Traditions and Decor

Homes and temples are decorated with flowers, lights, and colorful rangolis (traditional Indian floor art). The atmosphere is filled with spiritual chants, bhajans (devotional songs), and music.

6. Spiritual Significance

Navaratri represents the inner journey to defeat the negative forces within us—like anger, greed, ego—and awaken the divine consciousness. The festival promotes unity, devotion, and the celebration of femininity and inner strength.

Each day of Navaratri is associated with a specific color that holds significance:

Day 1: Yellow (Happiness and Brightness)

Day 2: Green (Growth and Harmony)

Day 3: Grey (Balance and Neutrality)

Day 4: Orange (Energy and Enthusiasm)

Day 5: White (Purity and Peace)

Sri Veda Bhagavan has bestowed upon us the Brahma Gayatri Maha Mantropadesha that all Hindus should become satsamskaras in the beloved abode of Sri Veda Bhagavan, who is eternal, Siddha of the day, Apaurusheya–Swarupa. There are many great people who have received such Gayatri Mantropadesha, adopted it, attained divinity and become sages, sadhakas and devotees, who have left the society as “Swayam Teertwa Paran Starayet”. There will be more, therefore Pujyashri Gurudeva has decided to perform Sri Gayatri Maha Yaga from 21st July 2014 to 15th November 2024 as part of ‘Chaturmasya Maha Deeksha’ at Sri Veda Bharati Peetham Ashram.
Therefore, we hope that all the devotees will be able to participate in this Mahayagna with Manasa, Wacha, Karmana and help you in whatever way you need, materially or financially, and be eligible for the grace of Goddess Gayatri.
